Potty Learning

I have been getting a lot of feedback from people about potty learning (even if I don't want it) Since Wyatt turned 2 everyone seems to have an opinion on how I should get him to start using the potty. I am in no hurry to have him out of diapers (he has some really cute cloth diapers ..lol) I don't want to push it until I know he is ready. We talk about it and he does seem like he has interest in it somedays. He has gone on the potty a few times and loves wearing big boy underwear. We move into our new house March 24th and I am thinking we will start more routinely on the potty learning then. He will be 28 months by then so that still isn't bad.

I just wish people would stop trying to pressure me into doing this now. I can't imagine the pressure a child feels when I can't handle all the pressure I am getting from everyone.

When did your kids potty learn? Did you also get the pressure to do it earlier than you did?

I don't have kids yet, we are beginning the foster to adopt process but I was reading in this month's parents magazine and they recommend starting the task between 2.5 and 3 years of age. They reference a study: "But a study published in Pediatrics found that Parents who start the process before their child is 27 months old end up dealing with soggy underwear for longer than those who wait for this window." Hope that helps.. Do whats best for you. :)

I've actually decided not to potty train. I bought a small potty seat and left it out for my oldest son. I told him what it was for and explained he could use it whenever he wanted. It sat for months and months. I had to dust it! Then one day, just after his third birthday, he decided to use it and there was no looking back. He switched quickly to the toilet and the only accidents have been when a washroom hasn't been available.

My youngest son just turned two and has had the potty explained to him. No pressure, no "trying" to get him to sit on it, no bribes. He's peed and pooped a few times and seems to be doing well with this no-training approach, too.

My twins were rather resistant to the idea, but then, when they were ready, they did it. No accidents, ever. I will admit, some bribery was involved. After one week of diaper free with no accidents, and a chart full of stickers, they got to go to Toys R us and get little batman bikes with training wheels.

kids definitely do it when they are good & ready! My oldest was very resistant and almost 3 when SHE finally decided - ok, I will do it now and bam, she did!

My youngest wasn't even 2 but that was bc she wanted to be like her big sister!

See how it varies & I did nothing different with the 2 of them! I was encouraging, bought tons of wonderful panties, basically threw a party any time they went potty, lol!

In the end - it's about them! If they are not ready it will not go well so you are doing the right thing by following his lead. They don't need the pressure! It will happen!

Good luck!

I trained my kids early, thinking that there is a window you might miss. I had a neighbor that was entering kindergarden and still in dipers - that's a big diper to change.
But.. here is the advice - Use your instincts - they will be right on the money for your child. No two kids are the same.

I recently received the Stylish Blogger Award and I’m passing it on to you. Check it out on My Wonderfully Dysfunctional Blog.

It is such a shame that parents get so much pressure on raising their own children, and it's usually the mums who get the pressure too.

I think you should do this when YOU feel ready. You are your child's advocate and you know him best. There is too much competition these days for who's child is potty trained, weaned, can spell their name etc etc etc, the first. And it really should be a matter of gradually adapting.

Take care,
CJ xx

My son is 26 months (I think?), and other people think he should start potty training. I'm with you, though. We have way too many cute diapers for that, but seriously, I'm no hurry either. He will let me know when he's ready and so far, he hasn't let me know much of anything, whcih is fine by me! :)

I think that you know your child the best. Plus, if you know that you are making a huge change in a few months (like moving) you don't want to start before that time....it could cause regression. Plus, there is no need to have to explain yourself either....especially since you seem like a very good mom!

I think that most people who encourage (or force their opinion) to potty train is because it's too often that you see a child that IS ready to potty train (or some other milestone), but it is more convenient for the parent to not upset the schedule and routine of their lives. I know that opinions can be extremely annoying, but people do try to have the best intentions, most days.

Listen, I'd probably be one of those to talk about your kid.....next year, when he's three. I work with kids and my least favorite thing is changing the diaper of a kid that is too big to fit on the changing table.
However heres some good news I've never seen a kid go to kindergarten in diapers so I think you got this.
New Follower, I can't wait to read some of your other stuff.

New follower through cloth diaper blog hop! My DS is 22 months. I bought a potty chair and I let him know it's there. He likes it he just hasn't officially used it yet. My family has been supportive with me as he is my first and they told me to take my time and he will let you know when he is ready! Good luck!

You know your son the best. My daughter was starting to potty train in the condo we lived in and she was gung ho about it. Then we moved and had our youngest and the interest was gone. At the same time we were trying to get her to sleep in her own room since we had a new baby on the way that will be co sleeping with me since I am nursing... She slept in her room before she was potty trained. I had a week of staying home and we just had underwear on all day and night and she had lots of pee and poo accidents. After a while, she got he peeing down and the poo was 2-3 weeks later, She was scared of it and we had to make sure she was eating lots of fiber so it would not scare/hurt when she poohed.

Hope that helps come visit soon.
